Cosmogenic isotopes such as 10Be and 26Al are widely used to determine the age and exposure histories of landscape features. Such information is critical to understanding the timing and rate of geologic processes such as active fault ruptures, glacial advances, soil formation and erosion of mountain belts. However, the utility of these isotopes is limited by the high cost and intense labor associated with producing a single measurement.

This project proposes development of cosmogenic 3He as a dating tool in common accessory mineral phases such as apatite, sphene and zircon. If successful, this technique will be unique in several respects. First, it will allow rapid and inexpensive cosmogenic dating of a wide range of rock types, thus increasing the number of samples that can be dated in a single study.

Constraining the age of young lavas, which generally fall outside the effective range of traditional geochronology methods, remains a key challenge in volcanology, limiting the development of high-resolution eruption chronologies. We present an in situ cosmogenic 3 He and 36 Cl surface-exposure chronology, alongside new minimum-limiting 14 C ages, documenting young eruptions at five sites in the Western Cordillera, southern Peru.

Four 3 He-dated lavas on the Nevado Coropuna volcanic complex hitherto thought to be dormant indicate that the central dome cluster is young and potentially active; two Holocene lavas on the easternmost dome are the youngest directly dated lavas in Peru to date. Two 3 He measurements confirm the Holocene age of these deposits and expand the chronology for one of the youngest major lava fields in Peru. These new data advance the recent Western Cordillera volcanic record whilst demonstrating both the considerable potential and fundamental limitations of cosmogenic surface-exposure methods for such applications.

It turned out that the ages clustered around 7 ka BP and 14 ka BP. This observation suggests that seismic events could be a possible trigger, instead of frequent heavy rain events or other mechanisms.

Now a problem is that New Zealand has quite many faults and a number of them could serve as candidates for the necessary shaking.
